Professor Wu mainly focuses on the residential segregation in urban China during the transitional period, which is the first academic research and practice in the systematic discussion on this topic. His research results won the third prize of “Yunnan Natural Science Award” in 2006. He was recommended by Professor Zhou Yixing of Peking University to take part in the compiling of the Chinese cities items forEncyclopedia Britannica. Recently, he puts most of his efforts on issues related to education-driven gentrification (Professor Wu is the person who creates the concept of Jiaoyufication), social differentiation and residential segregation, urban political economics, and environmental governance and energy policies. In general, his research fields mainly include:

Social space in cities. The complex is used to analyze and guide the path of decreasing the carbon lock-in effect, and promoting low-carbon and cleaner production, as well as sustainable development. It can also be used to study politics, economy and development model of cities in other countries which are undergoing transition.
