Professor Jin Xiaoyi now is a Ph.D supervisor in the School of Public Policy and Administration, XJTU, and the director of the Center of Gender and Development. From 1992 to 1999, she successively achieved her BA degree and LLM degree from the English Department and the Department of International Economics of the School of Humanities. From 1999 to 2002, she pursued the doctorate of management in the School of Management, XJTU. Afterwards, she focused on her postdoctoral investigation in the Stanford University, then went to the Santa Fe Institute and later in the Washington University as a visiting scholar. Professor Jin is appointed as the director of the China Population Association (CPA), the standing director of the Shaanxi Population Association, and the director of the Committee of Marriage and Family of the Chinese Sociological Association. In addition, she has presided over 1 major program of the National Social Science Fund, 1 major program supported by Shaanxi Provincial Social Science Fund, 3 international cooperation programs and 12 other national and provincial programs. Professor Jin has published 10 monographs and over 90 papers, 18 of them were published on SSCI or SCI, thus she awarded 2 first prizes, 4 second prizes, and 3 third prizes at provincial level. In 2016, her Ph.D student was awarded the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation in Shaanxi Province. Professor Jin was selected into the New Century Talent Plan of the Chinese Ministry of Education in 2007, the Talents for Humanities and Social Sciences in Shaanxi Province in 2014, and the outstanding young talents supporting plan of XJTU (Category A) in 2016.
Professor Jin mainly focuses on theory and policy studies for social inclusiveness of migrant workers, marriage & family and care for the aged, and gender imbalance, especially on the realistic challenges of new urbanization and population and social development, and related policy innovation. According to the demand of the trend of “family migration” rather than single worker migration and the coordinated urban-rural development, Professor Jin and her research team members initiated an integrated research system catering to people at all ages and covering the agricultural population relocation in consideration of the personal and family development. Specifically, this system involves livelihood and sustainable development of migrant workers, development of population, marriage and family in rural areas, urbanization and marriage squeeze for males, left-behind elders in rural areas and livelihood welfare of trailing elders, and left-behind children and the social adaptation and education of migrant children.
Systematic researches have been carried out on the influence of the re-construction of the social network of migrant workers on their opinions and behaviors, as well as their internal non-institutional social inclusiveness since 2004. Professor Jin's team initially introduces the correlation variable into the analysis framework of the influence factors of concept-behavior spreading and evolution. Instead of the traditional statistical analysis based on the property variable, her research is regarded as a breakthrough in this field. Such behavior researches that focusing on the migrant worker group per se and their communication and interaction with urban group are helpful to the understanding of the special effects of migrant workers on social stability and change in micro and macro perspectives. Micro studies carried out on the new concept-behavior spreading pattern through social network contribute to, through the evolvement mechanism of concept-behavior spreading, searching for the way of urban and rural integration, and the exploration of a proper path of urbanization suitable for China. All these efforts returned Professor Jin 1 major program supported by the National Social Science Fund in 2013, 1 major program by the Shaanxi Province Social Science Fund in 2016, 2 national projects, 1 program of the New Century Talent Support Program of the Ministry of Education of China, 1 program of the Scientific Research Foundation for the Returned Overseas Chinese Scholars, and 1 program of the Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation. Her research report was submitted to many government departments like the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China and the Shenzhen government office, and was accepted. In March of 2012, Professor Jin was invited as a guest commentator to the Seminar on Employment, Poverty Alleviation, Migration and Social Inclusion in the Context of the Economic Restructuring in China and the EU ( organized by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and European Commission—Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. In May of 2013, she was invited to give a report in the World Congress of Cultures co-organized by the UNESCO and the China National Commission for UNESCO, and another report at the Kyoto University in October of 2015. She was invited for interview and report by different media, includingChinese Science News,Shaanxi Daily,21st Century Economics Herald,Chinese Sciences Weekly,China Women’s News, etc. Her research on the marriage & family violence of migrant workers was included in theInternal Manuscripts of Social Sciences in Chinain 2015.
Since 2007, Professor Jin has systematically studied the social integration of single males above the average age for marriage in rural areas in the context of rural-urban population migration. She revealed the effect law of marriage squeeze on the social integration of migrating rural population at the micro level, verifying the impact of marriage squeeze, migration and gender on social integration of people in rural areas in narrow and broad senses. She revealed the influence of marriage and migrant work on social integration of males in rural areas, proposing a way of social integration for males above average marriage age who have difficulties in getting married in rural areas under the conditions of the increasingly serious problem of marriage squeeze and the increasing flow of rural-urban migrant population. Her studies have helped researchers to have a full understanding to the demographic and social consequences of marriage squeeze, and have provided a realistic basis for dealing with serious marriage squeeze and related demographic and social problems in the future. Her policy suggestions have promoted social integration and welfare of rural migrant population, especially the rural unmarried males. Along this research direction, Professor Jin undertook one sub-project of a major program supported by the National Social Science Fund of China, one national research program and one project funded by the President International Research Innovation Fund of Stanford University. Reported by theLegal Evening Newson November 24, 2010, her investigate into “Hundreds of Villages” was reprinted by many well-known domestic websites, such as Sina, Sohu, ifeng.com, Netease, China.com.cn and Tencent. As an invited expert, Professor Jin was interviewed withOmnimedia Talk Showof ifeng.com on February 23, 2016, and was interviewed by theLegal Reportof CCTV 1 in 2017 (broadcast on July 2, 2017).
In the past five years, Professor Jin combined the studies on “the protection and development of vulnerable groups under gender imbalance” with “the problems and solutions of new-type urbanization and citizenization of rural migrant workers”, and established a research team containing 3 young teachers of XJTU, 5 young teachers from other domestic universities, 2 domestically renowned scholars, 4 internationally renowned scholars, 9 doctoral students and 10 master students. A series of research and talent cultivation were carried out centering on major national needs in the context of new-type urbanization.
The research team has established close cooperation with renowned foreign universities such as Stanford University, University of Washington, University of California, Irvine, and University of Manchester, and completed more than 30 major national and provincial scientific research projects. At present, all young teachers in the team worked or studied in top foreign universities and each of them has undertaken at least one national project. In the past three years, 6 doctoral students in the team have won 7 projects funded from the National Social Science Fund of China and 1 project of the Natural Science Foundation of China. Professor Jin and key members of the team have undertaken 2 major programs and 1 key program of national social science and 1 major project of Shaanxi Provincial Social Science Fund. The team has completed comprehensive survey of rural migrant population in Shenzhen in 2005 and 2013, Xi’an in 2008 and 2012, Xiamen in 2009, Pingdingshan in 2015 and Hanzhong in 2016, constructing a relatively complete database. The team has accumulated theoretical and practical experience in the field of citizenization of rural migrant workers and related policies. Social experimental bases were established based on the cooperation with the government of Ankang in Shaanxi province and Pingdingshan in Henan province, providing conditions for achievement diffusion.
