Mixed methodology for health-related research
【Course Introduction课程介绍】
This course is designed for undergraduate, master and PhD students, focusing on the application of mixed research methods (qualitative and quantitative) in health-related studies, covering the principles, practical applications and problem-solving approach of common issues of each method. Through short-term intensive teaching and learning, this course aims to help students to build up data awareness and scientific research ability, to cultivate students' ability to understand and solve health-related problems from a multidisciplinary perspective.
Through a 16-hour teaching including both theory and practice, students will learn how to understand data, apply appropriate research methods, and select the correct statistical analysis techniques to handle corresponding data(such as when and how to use case studies or interview methods in different scenarios, and how to code and analyze qualitative data). For quantitative data, they will learn how to use specific statistical analysis and corresponding software (such as Stata, Mplus, etc.) for data process and in-depth analysis, such as the application of structural equation models (SEM), with a particular focus on improving the longitudinal data analysis skills, which aligns with the demands of current research direction in the health field.
本课程面向本科生及硕博研究生,聚焦于健康相关研究中定性和定量相结合研究方法的应用,涵盖各方法的原理、具体应用实践和常见问题的处理,通过集中授课学习,旨在提升学生的数据认识和科研能力,培养学生从多学科视角理解和解决健康相关问题。
通过16学时的理论和实践结合课程,带领同学们学习如何理解数据,如何应用适宜的研究方法并选择正确的统计分析方法处理对应的数据类型(如何种场景应用案例研究或者访谈研究方法以及如何对于定性数据进行编码和分析);对定量数据如何应用具体的统计分析软件(如Stata、Mplus软件等)进行数据的处理和深度分析,如结构方程模型(Structural Equation Modeling,SEM)的应用,尤其是纵向数据分析技能的提升,契合当今健康领域研究的迫切需求。

Ana Lorena Ruano, Ph.D., is a sociologist with a PhD in Public Health from Umeå University, Sweden. Currently, she is a researcher and associate professor at the Center for International Health at the University of Bergen, Norway, and serves as editor-in-chief of the International Journal for Equity in Health. Her research interests include health systems and policy research, primary health care and social participation, et.al. She teaches at the masters and doctoral level and is deeply involved in the development of skills that are equally useful for academics, policy & decision makers, and practitioners. Her focus is on teaching qualitative methods, both at CIH at UiB and at Charité Medical University in Berlin, Germany. She also focuses on developing skillsets for practitioners in global health through the Center for International Health's internship program.
Ana Lorena Ruano,瑞典于默奥大学(Umeå University)公共卫生博士,挪威卑尔根大学国际健康中心(CIH)研究员/副教授,国际期刊International Journal for Equity in Health主编(5年影响因子:4.7;SSCI 1区;管理学门类2“国际知名学术刊物”目录期刊之一)。她的研究聚焦于卫生体系与政策、初级保健及社会参与等领域。Lorena目前教授硕博研究生课程,并参与培养对学者、政策制定者和实践者受益的技能。她专注于教授定性方法,在卑尔根大学和德国柏林夏里特医科大学均有教学,致力于为全球卫生从业人员培养技能。

Baeksan Yu, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at Gwangju National University of Education since 2023. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, USA in 2020 and served as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oslo, Norwegian Institute of Public Health during 2020-2023. He is currently teaching undergraduate courses including <Sociology of Education> and graduate courses <Introduction to Quantitative Methods> and <Advanced Quantitative Methods> at Gwangju National University of Education. He received first place in the Advances in Methodology category of the 2025 Outstanding Publications Competition, awarded by Division H of the American Educational Research Association. He also serves as the principal investigator of a project titled Research on Mid- to Long-Term Policy Strategies to Mitigate Educational Inequality, funded by the National Education Commission, a presidential administrative committee in Korea. His recent work has been published in journals including Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, Preventive Medicine, British Journal of Nutrition, and Research on Child and Adolescent Psychopathology.
Baeksan Yu,2023年起任职于韩国光州教育大学,助理教授。他于2020年取得美国匹兹堡大学(全球软科排名90)博士学位,并于2020-2023年期间在挪威奥斯陆大学(全球软科排名72)/挪威公共卫生部从事博士后研究。Baeksan目前主要讲授有本科生课程《Sociology of education》,研究生课程有《Introduction to Quantitative Methods》和《Advanced Quantitative Methods》。主要研究成果发表在Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, Preventive Medicine, British Journal of Nutrition, Research on Child and Adolescent Psychopathology等国际知名期刊。

Qing Shen, Ph.D., Associate Professor/Senior Researcher in School of Public Health and General Practice, Tongji University School of Medicine. She received her Master and PhD degrees from Karolinska Institute, Sweden in 2014 and 2020, respectively, and did her postdoc at the University of Iceland during 2020-2022. She mainly works on the interdisciplinary epidemiological research of mental illness and somatic diseases (such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive dysfunction, tumors, immunity and inflammation, neurodegenerative disease, etc.), assessment on the risk factors and development of diseases, as well as exploration on the interaction and mechanisms from the social, genetic and environmental perspectives. She has rich experience in integrating and processing complex health data. She has published several scientific papers in Journals like British Medical Journal, JAMA Psychiatry, Nature Communications, Lancet Regional Health-Europe, eLife, eClinical Medicine, etc., as the first author/corresponding author. She is serving as an Editorial Board Member for BMC Medicine and BMC Public Health. She mainly teaches courses including <Brain and Cognition>, <Principles and Methods of Epidemiology>, <Bioinformatics>, and <Advances in Epidemiology and Biostatistics> at Tongji University.
沈青,同济大学公共卫生与全科医学院副教授/研究员,分别于2014年和2020年取得瑞典卡罗林斯卡医学院(软科排名43)硕士和博士学位,并于2020-2022年期间在冰岛大学从事博士后研究。主要研究方向是精神疾病与重大躯体疾病、慢性病(心血管疾病、认知功能障碍、肿瘤、免疫与炎症、神经退行性疾病等)的交叉流行病学研究,探索遗传和环境对疾病发生发展的交互作用及潜在机制研究,在健康大数据的整合、应用、处理复杂医疗数据分析等方面积累了丰富经验。原创性研究成果以第一作者/通讯作者(含共同发表于British Medical Journal, JAMA Psychiatry, Nature Communications, Lancet Regional Health-Europe, eLife, eClinicalMedicine, Breast Cancer Research, BMC Cancer等国际权威杂志,并担任国际期刊BMC medicine,BMC Public Health杂志编委。目前,她承担《脑与认知》《流行病学原理与方法》《生物信息学》《流行病学与统计学新进展》等课程教学工作。

Li Lu, Ph.D., is an associate professor at the School of Public Policy and Administration, Xi'an Jiaotong University and received support from the Young Talent Support Plan from Xi’an Jiaotong University” (Level B) in 2022. She received her PhD from the University of Macau in 2019 and didpostdoc at the University of Bordeaux, French National Institute of Health and Medical Research, and the University of Oslo, Norwegian Institute of Public Health, respectively, from 2019-2022. She has published more than 50 papers (5 ESI 1 % highly cited papers and 1 hot paper) in SCI/SSCI-indexed journals such as The Lancet Public health, The Lancet Regional Health-Europe, Trauma Violence & Abuse, Psychological medicine and Epidemiology and psychiatric sciences, with a H-index of 25, and a total of more than 2800 citations. Some of her research results have been reported by Yahoo, Top Santé and Futura-Sciences. She currently serves as an associate editor of International Journal for Equity in Health, and editorial board member of BMC psychiatry and Chinese Health Economics; and an expert in the Expert Pool of Women/Gender Studies in Shaanxi Province. Her current research interests include health management, health policy and mental health services.
卢丽,西安交通大学公共政策与管理学院副教授,博士生导师,2022年入选西安交通大学“青年拔尖人才支持计划”(B类)。分别于2012年、2015年和2019年获得武汉科技大学医学学士学位(预防医学)、西安交通大学医学硕士学位、澳门大学哲学博士学位。随后于2019年-2022年分别在波尔多大学/法国国家健康与医学研究院(UMR U1219, INSERM),以及奥斯陆大学(全球软科排名72)/挪威公共卫生部(NIPH)从事博士后研究工作。主持陕西省社科基金等项目,参与哲学社会科学领军人才项目、美国中华医学基金会项目、北欧应用研究合作组织(NordForsk)项目和法国国家研究总署支持的多项研究。在The Lancet Public health、The Lancet Regional Health-Europe、Trauma Violence & Abuse、Psychological medicine和Epidemiology and psychiatric sciences等SCI/SSCI收录学术期刊发表论文50余篇(5篇ESI 1 %高被引,1篇热点论文),Google学术H指数25,总被引2800多次。部分研究成果得到雅虎、法国‘最健康’(Top Santé)和未来科学(Futura-Sciences)等媒体和新闻网站的报道。她目前担任International journal for equity in health副编辑,BMC psychiatry和《中国卫生经济》编委;陕西省妇女/性别研究专家库专家。目前的研究兴趣聚焦在人群健康管理、卫生政策和心理卫生服务等方面。

Lai Sha, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the Institute of Health Management and Policy, School of Public Policy and Administration, Xi'an Jiaotong University since January 2019. Her research interests include health management and policy, specifically health care systems, hospital management, and health management. She has received funding supports, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, General Program of China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, and Social Science Foundation of Shaanxi Province. She has published more than 30 papers in journals like The International Journal for Equity in Health, The European Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Medical Economics.
赖莎,博士,副教授,2019年1月至今在西安交通大学公共政策与管理学院卫生管理与政策研究所任教。研究方向为卫生管理与政策,具体包括医疗保障体系、医院管理、健康管理等。目前,主持国家自然科学基金青年项目、中国博后面上项目、陕西省社会科学基金、校级培育项目等5项科研项目;参与教育部哲学社会科学研究重大课题攻关项目、科技部“十一五”科技支撑计划重点项目、美国中华医学基金会(CMB)等纵向项目及省部级横向研究10余项。近年来,在The International Journal for Equity in Health, The European Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Medical Economics等国际知名学术刊物发表论文30余篇。
