西安交通大学“国际月”——西交•通全球暑期学校(XJTISS) Lecture series of Poverty Reduction in China and Central Asia

Introduction

This course consists of a series of lectures on poverty reduction in China and Central Asia, presented by expert professors from Xi'an Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University in China and Samarkand State University in Uzbekistan. There are 8 lectures in total, covering foundational concepts of poverty, its conceptual measures, China's rural poverty alleviation since reform and opening up, and poverty reduction strategies in Uzbekistan. We will deliver lectures on empirical observations of poverty (Global situations, China, India, Central Asia and Uzbekistan), targeted poverty alleviation and rural revitalization in China and future prospects. Specific case studies include China's Poverty Reduction Relocation programs, gender equality issues and gender-based poverty in China. etc. For Central Asia, lectures will address demographic features, rural and urban poverty, functional impacts of poverty in Uzbekistan such as poverty, nutrition and labour markets, climate change and poverty,and the poverty reduction Strategies such as vouchers, cash transfers, access to skill-based education, etc. in Uzbekistan.

Students are encouraged to have basic knowledge of social sciences. The lectures are accessible to both undergraduate and graduate students and will be conducted entirely in English. We invite students and learners interested in poverty reduction to join this course, gaining valuable insights into global poverty issues and collaborative strategies for alleviation.


Lecturers

      Prof. Arindam Banik is an economist and ICCR's Chair of Indian Studies (Economics) at Samarkand State University, Uzbekistan, appointed by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Prof. Banik has taught at the University of West Indies and was a distinguished professor at the International Management Institute, New Delhi. He has consulted for various international organizations, including the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. Prof. Banik has published over 150 articles and several books on international economics and finance, and is the founding editor of the Global Business Review etc.

      Prof. Jie Li is a professor and PhD supervisor at the School of Public Policy and Administration, Xi'an Jiaotong University. Her research focuses on rural poverty alleviation, household livelihoods, and environmental protection. She holds a PhD in Management from Xi'an Jiaotong University and has been a senior visiting scholar at Stanford University etc. Prof. Li has published extensively and led multiple national and international research projects in the field of poverty reduction and rural studies. She is the leading professor of Shaanxi Provincial Innovative Research Group and got many research awards etc.


     Prof. Linjing Ren, is a lecturer and master's supervisor at the School of Public Policy and Management, Northwestern Polytechnical University. She was a visiting scholar at Stanford University. Her research focuses on ecological compensation, rural livelihoods, and sustainable rural development.

      Prof. Muhtor Nasyrov is the directer of International Relations Office at Samarkand State University,Uzbekistan. His work includes fostering international research and academic collaborations. He has been involved in numerous international programs and has visited several institutions worldwide to establish joint research and educational initiatives. For instance, he has worked on projects related to water stress and drought effects on crops and has been actively engaged in promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

    Prof. Xueyan Yang is a professor and PhD supervisor, director of Institute of Population and Development, School of Public Policy and Administration, Xi'an Jiaotong University. Her research focuses on gender imbalance and social stability, gender and population health, and gender and technological innovation. She has published over 80 academic papers and led more than 20 research projects, including key national and international collaborations. Prof. Yang has been recognized with several awards, and has been selected for multiple talent support programs.

     Prof. Cong Li is a professor and PhD supervisor at the School of Economics and Finance, Deputy director of Social Science Department Xi'an Jiaotong University. He holds PhD in Management from Xi'an Jiaotong University and completed postdoctoral research at Stanford University. His research interests include micro-development economics, sustainable development economics, and public policy related to poverty alleviation and rural development. Prof. Li has led several national research projects and received numerous awards, including the National Excellent Youth Fund of China.


Admission Information

Entry Requirement: The program caters to a wide variety of audiences, including undergraduates, postgraduates, and social learners interested in Poverty Reduction. All students are encouraged to join the program without grade requirements.

Enrollment: The program will enroll between 200-500 students. Students from XJTU participate in offline courses, while students from other universities in China or international universities etc. participate in online courses.

Student Treatment: Xi'an Jiaotong University will provide a study certificate (completion certificate) for this summer course, along with seminar stamps.
