Mike Thelwall，英国谢菲尔德大学教授，著名科学计量学家，普赖斯奖得主，中国科学院PIFI国际杰出学者，Scientometrics，Journal of Data and Information Science等多个国际期刊编委，英国“负责任科学计量学”组织成员。Mike Thelwall教授主要从社会科学的视角研究科学计量学、元科学和社交媒体，其研究主要将定量方法和人工智能应用于社会科学问题。他主持和参与多个国际项目研究，为联合国、英国研究创新剧（UKRI）、英国经济与社会科学研究理事会（ESRC）等提供咨询，并主导AI在英国科研评价中的应用研究。其论文在Google Scholar被引用56,000余次，H指数113。2015年获国际科学计量学领域最高荣—普赖斯奖。

讲座内容简介：

Evaluating the quality of academic research is a time-consuming expert review task. It is sometimes necessary for academic recruitment and promotion and also in some countries to evaluate the performance of departments and universities. Until recently, the main quantitative indicators used to support this process were citation-based, such as article or journal citation rates. New research has now shown that Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek can be more effective than citation-based indicators as evidence of the quality of academic outputs in most fields. This talk will review the main evidence so far, discuss why LLMs have this capability, and raise questions about whether it is practical to use them to support important research evaluations.
